Energy – our Life-Blood. Where does it come from, where does it go?
Dr. Ekkehard Schwab, a member of the Board of Trustees at MPI CPfS, is the former vice-president and group leader at BASF. His professional experience has given him valuable insight into the energy sector. Following the motto “use numbers, not adjectives”, the talk will put the political discussion about renewable energy and climate change in the context of the dimensions of our current energy system.

Throughout history, the access to affordable energy sources has driven the development of human societies. Overall, there is a significant correlation between standard of living and per capita use of primary energy. This correlation, however, also shows that the same standard of living can be achieved with a remarkable spread in per capita energy consumption .

In conclusion, the reduction targets for climate gas emissions most probably will only be realistic if a combination of replacing fossil based primary energy with renewable (solar) sources and a much more efficient use of energy is achieved. The latter is not only a technical but as well a social and behavioral topic.
